How do you find the best steak knives? At Food Network Kitchen, we took this question to heart, so we set out to find the top 5 steak knives and then test them to find out how they held up in different situations. After hours of research and testing, these were our results!

1) Cut Steak Knives with ease

Food network kitchen’s 5 best steak knives were tested on prime rib, filet mignon and sirloin. The results were surprising. After testing on over 6 prime rib roasts from 2 different local suppliers we found that one steak knife withstood all of our tests and cut our steaks with ease! . . . We recommend using a steak knife made of forged stainless steel because forged stainless steel holds its edge longer than other types of steel and retains more carbon, making it ideal for frequent use in commercial kitchens.

2) Balance and control

The first thing we wanted to do was balance and control our knives. We cut into every steak with precision (the same way you’d do it at home). The knife should be able to slice through a piece of meat like butter. The blade should feel sturdy when cutting through a chunk of meat, but not too heavy that it becomes unwieldy. Finally, each knife should look classic and sleek — we didn’t want any distracting adornments or flashy details to throw us off course. One last note: Don’t just stick with these five! Check out our entire guide on how to choose your best steak knives before you order them online or head over to your local market.

3) Comfort in grip Steak Knives

Chefs use knives every day to transform vegetables and proteins into masterpieces. The right knife can make you feel confident in your cooking abilities and help you produce food that looks impressive. Our test kitchen team evaluated each steak knife’s comfort in grip, sharpness and how easily it cut through everything from tomatoes to crusty breads. We also took durability into account when evaluating them. If you’re looking for a set of steak knives to last a lifetime, see our Ratings of Brands section below. For those who want to replace their old steak knives or upgrade their existing collection, we’ve highlighted five standout models with desirable features

4) Style of Steak Knives- The Final Touches

A steak knife is more than just a tool. It’s a mainstay of fine dining that, when chosen correctly and used properly, can make a great meal even better. The right knife makes cutting through juicy cuts like tenderloin and ribeye a breeze. The wrong one? Well it could end up being more frustrating than helpful. As with most things, choosing an ideal steak knife comes down to personal preference; however, there are a few things you should consider before making your decision. Consider what kind of food you plan on using your steak knives on — Will they be slicing through delicate vegetables? Thick roasts? Thinly sliced deli meats?
